A water rescue Wednesday quickly turned into a mystery car crash just outside of Ceredo when neighbors told rescue crews the submerged truck had likely been in the James River for three days.
William White noticed a hairpin turn warning sign had been knocked down Sunday on James River Road beside his home.
“I came out and noticed in the yard up there the signs were all knocked down,” White said. Rescue divers braved the cold water to check the cab and didn’t find anyone inside, but that wasn’t a comfort for Ceredo Fire Chief Dave Caudill.
“There have been situations where the cars have been submerged and the body has actually gotten out of the vehicle,” Caudill said, “then you have a situation where you have to recover a body.”
