The Huntington police and fire departments are making changes to hire the men and women needed to keep families safe. Their efforts are paying off already. The police department currently has three times more applications than it did last summer. But both chiefs tell us they are still a long way away from where they want to be. Making the grade as a Huntington police officer is particularly difficult. "Last time I had 91 applicants,” said Chief Hank Dial. “Two met the standard." That’s certainly not the number you're hoping for with 13 vacancies at HPD right now. Part of the reason is that starting July 1, the approved size of officers went from 102 to 108.
