Land on Martinsburg’s south end is being considered as a potential site for a new Baker Heights (W.Va.) Volunteer Fire Department station. Hunter Wilson, chairman of the Berkeley County (W.Va.) Fire Service Board, said Monday that property off New York Avenue currently owned by a Northern Virginia developer is the preferred site for the fire department’s new station. “There’s a verbal deal, and we’re working on a contract,” he said. Falls Church, Va.-based Uniwest Development LLC has asked the city of Martinsburg to “de-annex” about 2.4 acres of property, which the company proposes to sell to the fire service board in conjunction with a land-use “swap.” The Martinsburg City Council is slated to act on the company’s request Thursday during its regular monthly meeting.
