State law says drivers should pull over, as close as possible, to the right side of the road, and clear of intersections, when an ambulance or other emergency vehicle is approaching.
But Wood County Sheriff Steve Stephens, a former Vienna police chief, says they don't always do that.
"I've had people lock their brakes and stop in the middle of Grand Central (Avenue), a six-lane highway," Sheriff Stephens says. "Then, when we're trying to approach with lights and siren on, it confuses the public if we're weaving in and out to get between cars."
Getting to the emergency scene as quickly as possible is only one concern. Another is the risk of a collision, possibly fatal, involving an ambulance and another vehicle.
