Mercer County: First responders battle high rainfall, flood waters

Rescuing a stranded motorist after his car stalled in high water was among the many calls first responders in Bluefield and across Mercer County had to handle Monday night as heavy rain put local streets underwater. Doppler radar used by the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, Va. spotted thunderstorms 6:46 p.m with heavy rain, according to an advisory issued by forecasters. Locations including Bluefield, Princeton, Athens, Matoaka and Rocky Gap,Va. were expected to experience minor flooding. In the city of Bluefield, College Avenue, Bluefield Avenue, and streets along both lanes were flooded, and lower parts of Grassy Branch Road were under high water as well, according to dispatchers with Mercer County 911. First responders were reporting high water on Stadium Drive.
