Clatsop Community College, a public, two-year institution, located in Astoria, Oregon, serving students and communities in northwest Oregon and southwest Washington, is seeking an enthusiastic, motivated Instructor to teach Fire Science and Maritime Fire beginning Winter Term 2020
Assignment: Full-time Faculty work 174 days annually from mid-September thru mid-June with options for summer teaching.
Job Summary
Under general supervision of the Dean of Workforce Education and Training, works collaboratively to provide classroom and laboratory instruction for Fire Science and Maritime students.
Essential Duties
1. Design and implement instructional activities in classroom and laboratory settings, using sound instructional delivery techniques at times which meet the needs of students and supporting agencies.
2. Works with faculty colleagues to develop, implement, evaluate and periodically review and revise the organizing framework, learning outcomes, and curriculum of the program.
3. Evaluate student achievement of identified learning objectives and outcomes and assign grades according to policies
4. Provide for student evaluations of teaching and learning effectiveness
5. Provide academic advising to students
6. Participate in determining academic policies and procedures of the institution and other appropriate faculty activities of the College
7. Maintains office hours
8. Maintains professional competence and job qualifications
9. Operates and maintains the fire training facility and equipment while ensuring the safety of students
10. Performs other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications:
1. Bachelor’s degree and at least three years of verifiable professional work experience in the fire science field; OR Seven (7) years of professional work experience related to fire science. Candidates hired without an Associate Degree will be required to complete an Associate Degree within three years after hire date as a condition of continued employment.
2. High school diploma or GED.
3. Physically able to wear Personal Protective Equipment and Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus for extended periods when providing fire fighting instruction.
Preferred Qualifications:
1. Previous experience teaching at the post-secondary level
2. Associate Degree in fire science.
3. Industry certification (e.g. USCG Approved Basic Marine or Advanced Marine Firefighting; NFPA or equivalent Firefighter I, Instructor I, Apparatus Operator, Incident Command—ICS 100, 200, 700 and 800)4. Marine fire fighting experience and/or training
Knowledge
- Knowledge of instructional methods appropriate to student achievement of program learning outcomes in the practice of fire science
Skills
- Interpersonal communication skills to successfully relate to staff, students and the public
- Excellent oral communication and presentation skills
- Excellent written communication skills
- Skill in computer operations including word processing applications
- Skill in the development of performance and/or classroom evaluation
- Skill in promoting critical thinking in a variety of educational settings
Abilities
- Ability to develop valid and reliable student achievement assessments
- Demonstrated experience in team approaches to problem solving
- Ability to manage time, prioritize tasks, and organize work to complete assigned duties
Working Conditions
Must be able to tolerate all fire simulation environment conditions: climbing stairs, wearing fire gear, working in dark smoky rooms, exposure to heat and flames, handling water hoses under difficult conditions.
