The City of Vancouver, Washington is located on the shores of the Columbia River, approximately ten miles north of Portland, Oregon. With a population of nearly 185,000, Vancouver is the fourth largest city in Washington State. The Vancouver Fire Department provides emergency and non-emergency services to over 272,000 people due to a contract for service with Clark County Fire District #5. The City of Vancouver is seeking a third Deputy Fire Chief who is a seasoned, decisive administrator and effective manager with command presence and experience. This is a newly created position. The three Deputy Fire Chiefs serve as the next level of command immediately under the Fire Chief. The Department consists of 190 sworn personnel and 28 civilian employees, which includes the Fire Marshal. Candidates must possess equivalent to a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a major in Fire Science Administration or a closely related field; four (4) to six (6) years of experience in an administrative/leadership capacity of a similar size agency; valid Washington State driver’s license or the ability to obtain one; documented National Incident Management System qualifications at an advanced level, including the ability to serve in command or general staff positions at major incidents; and ability to obtain EFO/CFO and/or a master’s degree is desired. Experience with budgeting is vital for this position; Washington State labor experience is highly desired but not required. Experience working with Human Resources on personnel issues will benefit candidates as well as experience managing contracts. The monthly salary range for the Deputy Fire Chief is $11,737-$15,264; placement within this range is dependent upon experience and qualifications of the selected individual.
