Firefighter/Paramedic

Kick start your career! The LHHFD is looking for qualified Firefighter/Paramedics. This is a flexible part-time position that provides a great foundation to reach your goals of being a Firefighter/Paramedic. 

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES

Responds to fires, medical emergencies, and other emergency and non-emergency situations, and takes appropriate action to protect life and property; performs various staff support assignments in addition to normal emergency response activities. Responds to calls for medical aid, including traffic collisions and rescue situations.

Provides pre-hospital care, including examining patients and monitoring vital signs; establishes I.V. lines, administers medications, inserts airway, defibrillates heart and takes other basic and advanced first aid and life support actions; communicates with hospital and/or health care professionals in person or by radio; completes required reports. Restocks supplies and maintains ambulances and other emergency vehicles and equipment in proper working condition. In a fire emergency, connects supply lines; controls and extinguishes fires using various size hand-lines, deck ladders and portable water monitors; connects foam eductors and applies foam and chemical for fire suppression. Searches buildings and rescues victims from buildings and motor vehicles sometimes using specialized power and hand tools; uses various hand and power tools to obtain entry to buildings, frees trapped accident victims and provides ventilation. Participates in specialized rescue operations including: aerial, water, underground and confined space situations, including the use of rigging and shoring. Contains, controls, and decontaminates hazardous material spills. Participates in clean-up, salvage, overhaul operations; cleans, services, and ensures operational readiness of fire vehicles, apparatus, hoses and equipment, and assists with the maintenance of the station and facilities.

Participates in various staff support assignments, including but not limited to: fire prevention, inspection, and investigation; maintenance of inventory records; and scheduled inspection of department equipment. Participate in daily building maintenance for training facilities, living facilities and fire station grounds. Participate in fire department related equipment checks, preventative maintenance and testing. Works with the community in a variety of educational, public relations, and service programs; may provide CPR training classes as assigned. May serve in a higher level classification on a regular basis if certified and/or licensed to do so; may direct the work of others, particularly in a medical emergency.

QUALIFICATIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Completion of a California State Fire Marshal (CSFM) certified Firefighter I Academy (Must be complete within the last 3 years) or Firefighter I certification.
  • Current CPAT or Biddle.
  • Must hold an active Paramedic certification through the State of California.
  • Must hold an active Los Angeles County Paramedic Accreditation certification within three (3) months of the date of hire.
  • Must have a valid California Class C Driver’s License and able to complete a Firefighter Endorsement within 1 year of employment (Preference given to CSFM Driver/ Operator Certified).
  • Must have a satisfactory driving record clear of misdemeanor convictions and have no felony convictions.
  • Able to work an assigned shift; averaging 24 hours per week.
