Brief Summary of Job Duties

The UCSB Diving & Boating Safety Program oversees one of the largest and most active scientific diving and boating programs in the nation. The Boat Safety Officer position will develop, implement, and monitor safety programs and policies to ensure compliance with federal/state safety regulations, and ensure a safe workplace. Supported programs include boat safety, dive safety, field safety and laboratory safety. Position provides technical support for fire safety and emergency management training, as well as other EH&S programs and policies as needed. This position will require periodic travel to oversee and support UCSB small boating activities locally, nationally and internationally.

Key Responsibilities include:

• Develops, implements, and monitors boat safety program, systems, procedures, and training.

• Assists with the implementation and monitoring of dive safety, laboratory safety, field safety and emergency management training.

• Performs outreach and communication to organization within relevant field.

• Performs technical work related to field(s) of expertise.

• Designs new and / or recommends improvements to existing processes and procedures.

• Monitors compliance and may serve as organization liaison with regulatory agencies.

• Inspects, investigates incidents and complaints, and recommends corrective action as needed.

• Drafts reports and other documentation, including use of relevant scientific data.

• Conducts sampling and / or monitoring related to field(s) of expertise.

• Provides training within several EH&S areas.

• May oversee work of other technical staff. • Creates and adjusts methodologies to meet changing regulatory and scientific environment.

Required Qualifications

• At least 3 years of experience with small boating operations, across a variety of vessels, weather conditions and geographic locations.

• At least 3 years of experience working in a research laboratory, or equivalent.

• At least 3 years of experience as a scientific diver.

• Bachelor's Degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.

• AAUS Scientific Diver – 60 ft Lead Diver Rating or greater

• CA boating education certificate, or equivalent

• Diver Oxygen administration certification, plus ability to obtain instructor status within 2 years of hire.

• First Aid and CPR certification, plus ability to obtain instructor status within 2 years of hire.

• SCUBA instructor status within 2 years of hire.

• Must pass the UCSB/AAUS diving physical examination

Preferred Qualifications

• Professional certification preferred.

Conditions of Employment

• Satisfactory completion of a criminal history background check

• Must maintain valid CA DL, a clean DMV record and enrollment in DMV Pull-Notice Program

• UCSB is a Tobacco-Free environment

Hiring Range:  $61,200 - $70,000/yr    

Working Days and Hours: M-F 7:30 - 4:30
