This is an executive level position involving the oversight and administration of the fire department.   Under the direction of the City Administrator and guidance of the Mayor and City Council, the Fire Chief is responsible for providing leadership, direction and to plan, manage, and oversee the activities and operations of the fire department by setting the strategic direction of the department.  This position exercises supervision over all employees within the department, either directly or indirectly through supervisors.  The Fire Chief sets the goals and objectives and carries them out through various means including preparing a budget, controlling expenditures, and reviewing effectiveness of operations and personnel through direct and indirect supervision.  The Fire Chief may take command responsibility at emergency and non-emergency incidents, serve as the Public Information Officer, provide highly responsible and complex support to the City Administrator, and serve as the department’s liaison with outside departments and committees.  The Fire Chief must establish and maintain effective working relationships with the Mayor, City Council, city staff members, and citizens.
