Some of what you'll be doing:

 

As an Experienced Firefighter you will be conducting aircraft rescue and firefighting, fire suppression and rescue, confined space rescue operations, emergency management services, hazardous materials responses, all mandated training, fire prevention, inspections, pre-fire planning assignments and vehicle and equipment maintenance under direction of a Captain, Battalion Chief, Assistant Fire Chief, or the Fire Chief.

  • You will respond to emergencies in order to mitigate the loss of life, property and damage to the environment.  
  • You will prepare to assume and execute duties assigned through the Incident Management System. 
  • You will be responsible to learn, develop and demonstrate technical and functional expertise in all areas of responsibility.  
  • You will utilize skills and actions to contribute to mission readiness and performance.  
  • You will stay current with industry changes and advances as they are adopted by the Fire Department and addressed in training.  
  • You will maintain apparatus, equipment, and Fire Department facilities.  
  • You will assist with minimizing hazards through inspections, fire prevention regulation enforcement and public education. 
  • You will efficiently and accurately prepare reports and maintains records and files as required. 
  • You will participate in Fire Department physical fitness program.  
  • You will safely and efficiently drive and operate all Fire Department apparatus and equipment.  
  • You will engage in emergency responses and service responses utilizing risk assessment procedures and size-up techniques to assure appropriate actions are taken without delay.  
  • You will be responsible for your personal safety and the safety of team members.  
  • You will be responsible for the security, maintenance and operation of equipment assigned to them.  
  • You will prepare and review, as assigned, narrative and data reports of emergency situations that may be used as legal records.  
  • You will be responsible to act in accordance with the Port of Seattle Fire Department’s core values: Accountability, Trust, Integrity, and Respect.  
  • You will be responsible to act in accordance with the Port of Seattle’s Guiding Principles and Policies and Procedures.

Who you are:

 
  • Experienced – You have three (3) consecutive years of experience as a full-time paid firefighter, currently employed.
  • Educated – You possess a IFSAC or ProBoard Firefighter I, IFSAC or ProBoard Hazardous Material Operations and a current EMT (National Registry).
  • Desired – We hope you have a IFSAC or ProBoard Firefighter II.

  • Knowledgeable – You have the skills to use firefighting tools and equipment, operate and control heavy-duty fire apparatus, perform hose and ladder evolutions and apparatus operations and a variety of first aid equipment, first aid procedures and lifting techniques.
What else you need to know: 
  • Driver’s License – You will need a valid Washington State Driver’s License, or the ability to obtain one, is required in order to travel locally.
  • Work Schedule –You may be required to work any and all assigned shifts, including weekends and holidays. You may be required to work during emergencies.
  • Work Environment – You will generally work outdoors in all types of weather conditions. You may be exposed to areas of high noise, various hazardous materials, work at heights and/or in confined spaces.
  • Washington State Residency Requirement – Employees must establish a residence in Washington state within 30 days of their first day of employment and must maintain a residence in Washington State during their employment with the Port of Seattle. If a position is eligible to telework, work performed while teleworking must be performed in Washington State.
  • COVID-19 Vaccination Requirement – Effective, November 15, 2021, the Port of Seattle will require that at the time of hire, and as a condition of employment, the successful candidate will be able to provide proof of their full COVID-19 vaccination status, as part of the hiring process. This is a condition of employment for all positions at the Port of Seattle. People are considered fully vaccinated two weeks after their second dose in a two-dose series or two weeks after a single-dose vaccine.  Prior to employment, candidates may make requests for a reasonable accommodation based on a medical disability or for sincerely held religious beliefs. Philosophical, political, scientific, or sociological objections to vaccination will not be considered for an exemption or accommodation.
  • Overtime Eligible – You are eligible for overtime pay in this role.
  • Safety Requirements – You will be required to comply with all work rules, safety, and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements. 
  • Security Requirements – As the successful candidate, you must pass a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) background check as well as a criminal history background check with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Your employment will be contingent upon obtaining a Port of Seattle ID badge upon clearance. You will also be required to obtain a U.S. Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) Customs Seal within 30 days of hire.
  • Union Representation – This position is represented by International Association of Firefighters union, Local 1257.
