Overview
Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue encourages qualified individuals to participate in an examination for Deputy Fire Marshal II. The examination will result in a list of eligibles used to fill vacancies during the life of the eligible list.
Candidates who meet the preferred qualifications are eligible to start at $9,461.34/month. The maximum step is $9,914.01/month. A new collective bargaining agreement is pending ratification, expected in mid-December.
Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue provides fire protection and emergency medical services to approximately 542,524 residents in one of the fastest growing regions in Oregon. Our 390-square-mile service area includes the cities of Beaverton, Durham, King City, Newberg, North Plains, Rivergrove, Sherwood, Tigard, Tualatin, West Linn, and Wilsonville, and unincorporated portions of Clackamas, Multnomah, Washington, and Yamhill counties. Our district has 28 fire stations staffed by more than 442 career firefighters, a volunteer fire station, a Command and Business Operations Center, a training facility, a South Operating Center, and a Logistics Service Center. Residents served by TVF&R benefit from the sophistication, economies of scale, and resources of a large fire district with the accessibility and community involvement of a small-town fire department.
The Deputy Fire Marshal II conducts assigned investigations, plan review activities, training, program management and other enforcement work to carry out the District's fire prevention program. This position delivers educational and special programs to the general public and target audiences both internal and external to the District.

Example of Duties
The essential functions of this position include, but are not limited to, the following duties and responsibilities:
· Occupancy, premises, installation and fire protection system inspections and finding reviews
· Prepares written and electronic inspection reports, correction notices, notices of violation and other correspondence
· Delivers hazard abatement plans
· Conducts plan reviews
· Serves as District liaison to state, city, and county building, planning, and development agencies and departments
· Delivers educational, informational and training programs
· Maintains work schedules, records and reports in written and electronic formats

Qualifications
EDUCATION
An associate or higher level degree in fire administration, prevention, engineering or science, or a closely related field is required.
EXPERIENCE
Two or more years of experience working at a level equivalent to the Deputy Fire Marshal I required. This experience includes:
· Inspecting all types and classifications of existing occupancies, premises and installations to identify and abate fire hazards, deficiencies in fire construction, fire escapes/exiting, installed fire protection systems, and to assure general compliance with state and local fire codes, laws, and regulations.
· Reviewing inspection findings with occupants and owners, and developing necessary corrective action plans.
· Performing re-inspections as necessary to assure required corrective actions are completed.
· Preparing written and electronic inspection reports, correction notices, notices of violation and other correspondence.
· Delivering educational, informational and training programs to the public.
Fire investigation experience, training, or certification is strongly preferred.
Plans examiner experience, training, or certification is strongly preferred.
Public education experience, training, or certification is strongly preferred.
CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSURE
Current ICC Fire Code Certification
Must possess and maintain recognition by Oregon State Fire Marshal’s Office as Fire & Life Safety Specialist I by the completion of one (1) year of employment.

EXAMINATION COMPONENTS:
Minimum Requirement Review:
Pass/fail review of application in relation to minimum requirements.
All successful applicants will be invited to participate in the assessment center.
Assessment Center:
The on-site assessment center will consist of the following components:
· Interview Exercise (30%)
· New Construction Meeting Exercise (30%)
· Inspection Exercise (20%)
· Writing (Letter composition) (20%)
Candidates must score 60% or above on each component within the assessment center to be placed on the eligible list.
Any score tie-breaker required for eligible list rank will be the application submission time and date stamp.
ELIGIBLE LIST:
Candidates who pass the examination will be placed on a ranked civil service entrance eligible list, which lasts as long as twenty-four (24) months. When vacancies occur during the life of the list, the top candidates on the eligible list will be invited to participate in the selection process.
VETERANS PREFERENCE:
It is the District's policy to provide eligible veterans with preference as required by law. For any qualifying veterans passing the assessment center, preference points will be added to the final weighted score.
SCHEDULE:
The assessment center will occur on Wednesday, January 18, 2023, at the TVF&R South Operating Center located in Wilsonville, Oregon. All individuals meeting the minimum education and experience qualifications will be invited to participate.
Candidates should plan to spend approximately four (4) hours for the assessment. The assessment schedule will be set after the closing date and will be communicated by email to the qualified candidates. Invitations to participate in the assessment center will be sent no later than January 4, 2023.
