Struggling to do more with less, the Calgary Fire Department had to look for creative solutions to fit their needs and budget. The answer came from EXTREME Fire Stations (EFS), a division of EXTREME Portable Buildings (EPB), in the form of a relocatable structure that could be erected in the middle of a major urban center. Unbelievably, the building could house a single apparatus bay, living quarters for 4 full time firefighters, a training area, an office space, a fitness area, a public restroom, along with complete IT, communications and alarm systems. Importantly, the structure met the following expectations:
- Provide rapid response fire protection services in outlying and new communities where it was not economically feasible to build a permanent site built station.
- Maintain the same in areas where outdated stations are out of commission while they are updated or rebuilt.
- Offer true and ready portability for multiple relocations without loss of functionality or structural integrity.
- Operation-ready in a short time frame.
EFS worked with the department to custom design a station to their exact specifications and local building codes. Design, production and installation was completed in less than a year. Mark Woodward, Manager of Capital Development for the Calgary Fire Department has stated: “The firefighters are excited to be operating out of the structure and very satisfied with layout and functionality of the space.”
With the success of this installation, the city has reserved an option to acquire several more EXTREME Fire Stations.
