A 19-year-old Mount Marion fire captain died Saturday evening while fighting a house fire in the Centerville Fire District, authorities said Sunday. At the Mount Marion Fire Department headquarters on Old Kings Highway and Glasco Turnpike Sunday morning, a sign outside paid tribute to volunteer fire Capt. Jack H. Rose, who died after going into distress at the scene of a reported chimney fire at 11 Fel Qui Road, off John Jay Road. Rose, a Saugerties resident, was a 2014 graduate of John A. Coleman Catholic High School in the town of Ulster, according to his Facebook page. Authorities said Centerville Fire Department firefighters had been dispatched to the fire scene, with mutual aid from Mount Marion, at 6:59 p.m. Saturday. According to a press release from the Mount Marion Fire District, firefighters responding to a report of a chimney fire observed flames coming from the first floor of the residence, and a team of firefighters entered the basement to extinguish it. Rose, who was part of the group, became separated from his team, but was quickly located by fellow firefighters and taken from the basement. “Once outside, Rose became unresponsive and firefighters initiated livesaving measures,” a press release from the Mount Marion Fire District said.
