On Tuesday, an abandoned house on the 1300 block of West Miller Street in Springfield went up in flames. Unfortunately, the house was fully engulfed in flames when crews arrived. The damage caused the floors to begin caving in. One firefighter fell through the depleting floors. He was later taken to the hospital for his injuries. Two other firefighters were also injured. This prompted Chief Allen Reyne, with the Springfield Fire Department, to look at the last 50 fires they've responded to. He found 12% of the fires were at vacant homes. "When it's an abandoned home like we saw yesterday, those incidents can grow so we're now relying on someone driving by to report the fire, so that means it's now breached the structure,” said Chief Reyne. Springfield Public Works said it’s aware abandoned homes are a problem in the city.
