VIDEO: An off-duty Rochester firefighter came to the rescue during a recent boat fire – using an unconventional means to help extinguish it. Rochester firefighters’ union IAFF107 says firefighter Oscar Herrera stepped in to help fight the fire on May 20 at Mayer’s Marina on Irondequoit Bay. Video captured him using his jet ski to help get the fire under control. "I saw it. Naturally I wanted to see what was going on so I went over and there were a couple of other jet skis basically staring at it and I thought, 'What can I do to help?' And I’d seen it on YouTube a couple of times so I wanted to try it myself," Herrera said. Herrera says he did some maneuvers to create a big wake to throw water on the flames. It was a first for him, but because it worked so well, it may not be his last mission. Herrera works at Engine 10 at Dewey and Ridgeway avenues.
