That was the journey for one history-making group of city teens this summer.
The inaugural class of the Trenton Junior Public Safety Academy learned firsthand that being a first-responder means hard work and dedication even just to learn the skills needed for the job.
Created by Fire Director Kenneth Douglas and lead instructor Brian Roberts, the Trenton Fire Department set out to make a program that pushes kids past their comfort zones but also gives them skills and experience that can benefit them long after the summer program ends. “He didn’t just want to run a summer camp, he wanted it to be a Junior Public Safety Academy,” Roberts told The Trentonian. “The kids come in here and they learn, but they also have a good time in the summertime.”
