PHOTOS: Firefighters in Newtown Square staged their own sequel to the movie “National Treasure” recently as they retrieved and opened a decades-old time capsule that had resided in the cornerstone of their old station for over 45 years and contained many items from 1916.
In 1965, the company’s original fire station on Newtown Street Road was knocked down and from that wreckage firefighters retrieved a time capsule that was placed there in 1916. That box was placed into a new box, new items were added and everything put into the cornerstone of the new building in 1967.
Firefighter Preston Tyrrell, who organized the opening of the capsule, said when he asked old-timers about the time capsule’s name, Gilroy Roberts, it always came up as having contributed an important item to the capsule.
