VIDEO: The Fort Dodge Fire Department is using a new tool to fight fires.
The department's new fire cameras are small, lightweight cameras that are mounted to their helmets. They capture footage that most people have never seen before, and that footage could help make firefighting safer in Fort Dodge. "To have that small, little device on that helmet, that the firefighter doesn't even know it's there, is quite a change," Chief Steve Hergenreter said.
Hergenreter never dreamed of this type of technology when he began fighting fires 34 years ago.
"Fires happen so fast. And you don't remember a lot of things, so the helmet camera really shows how things happened in the fire," Hergenreter said.
"It's made specifically for firefighters," firefighter and paramedic Mychal Edler said.
