We might never know who torched and nearly destroyed the Texas landmark, now 167 years old, on June 8, 2008. Although there was surveillance video, the Texas Department of Public Safety has yet to charge anyone, and the statute of limitations for the crime expired in 2019.
DPS, which is responsible for securing the governor, the mansion and the state Capitol, did not respond to a request for comment.
Gregg Cox, former Travis County assistant district attorney, told KVUE in 2019 there is still a small chance that someone could be prosecuted. That’s because the arsonist could be charged with the crime only if they lived outside of Texas during the first 10 years since the fire, Cox said.
