State officials estimate between 25 and 28 families lost their primary residence in the McKinley and Deshka Landing fires, without insurance to cover their homes.
While the state division of homeland security is providing grants and temporary housing for eligible families to rebuild, there are others who are involved in the relief efforts such as the Wasilla Emergency Management and Mayor Bert Cottle.
They’ll especially be helping with the rebuilding process. Unlike the sockeye fire, which was contained earlier in the summer, the building season has become much shorter for victims of the McKinley and Deskha fires.
Mayor Bert Cottle of Wasilla brought some new partners to a brainstorming meeting with Mat-su borough officials last week. One of the businesses Cottle called was Alaska custom containers of big lake. They're offering discounted rental or sale rates of their mobile offices, to families who need temporary housing while they rebuild.
