One discussion the board focused on was who is responsible for dispatching volunteer ambulances. E-911 Director Holly Britain says it’s up to the 911 center to see that the proper agency is responding. If the initial volunteer agency is not available then the 911 center and not the agency dispatches a secondary unit. Britain says that helps maintain a quick and consistent line of response. "It comes from the 911 agency so it’s not coming from being flip-flopped between volunteers in the area," she says. It was also suggested that the five volunteer EMS providers develop an organization similar to the volunteer firefighters association that can coordinate with dispatchers.
