Birmingham Fire officials say at least five homeless people were staying in some of the rooms of the old Hospitality Inn—even though the business closed years ago. They say the fires started in six hotel rooms on two different days. The blaze destroyed the hotel and some neighboring businesses. “We know we had multiple points of origin here. Does that lead us to saying arson? Well no, because we don’t know if it was criminal intent to set those fires,” said Birmingham Fire Battalion Chief Thomas White. Officials don’t know how the fires started — and there’s no word on when the investigation will wrap up.
