So far in Alabama this year almost 70 people have died from fires. Out of those 70 less than 20 had working smoke detectors. Firefighters stress that having working smoke detectors really is a life-saving tool. In Shelby County there is a way you can get these devices installed in your home at no cost to you! As cold as it is outside, a lot of people are looking for ways to stay warm inside their home. The Calera Fire Department says that’s when the risk of fire goes up which is why it is extra important to make sure your smoke detectors work. The Calera FD says that their department, along with several other fire departments, will come to your home and install smoke detectors or check and make sure existing ones are working. Chief Sean Kendrick with Calera Fire Department says if you don’t have any smoke detectors there is also a program that actually offers them completely for free.
