Birmingham Fire and Rescue Battalion Chief Jackie Hicks confirm a deceased person was found inside an apartment after an early-morning fire at Watertown Lodge Apartments. Crews responded to Watertown Circle just after 4 a.m. Responders saw light smoke and no visible sign of flames. However, firefighters found an unidentifiable body when they went into the downstairs unit to extinguish any hot spots. Battalion Chief Hicks says the fire was started in “multiple spots.” Police and homicide detectives were on the scene and Birmingham PD has confirmed it is conducting a homicide investigation. The cause of the fire is not known at this time.
