A homicide investigation is underway in south Birmingham after firefighters discovered a body while extinguishing an apartment fire Tuesday afternoon.
Birmingham police said South Precinct officers responded to a fire at an apartment building in the 1900 block of 15th Avenue South around 5:40 p.m. Tuesday. At the scene, officers saw smoke inside of an apartment unit and handed the call over to Birmingham Fire and Rescue crews, who contained the fire.
Firefighters notified officers after discovering two men inside of the apartment, one of whom was dead.
Birmingham police said evidence was observed at the scene that lead to this incident being investigated as a homicide.
Limited details are available at this time, but one man was taken into custody at the scene. Police did not specify if that man was the one found alive inside of the apartment fire.
