The Childersburg Fire and Rescue Department cleared the scene Sunday afternoon, hours after evacuating a business and closing part of Highway 280. Talladega 911 received a call at 10 a.m. of "gasoline coming from the ground." Crews arrived to find at least 350 gallons of gasoline had leaked onto the pavement at 32183 Highway 280 at the Pit Stop. The underground containment system and pumps were immediately turned off and crews isolated the area and evacuated the property. Pelham Fire Department's HazMat team also responded to the scene. They set up continuous air monitoring around the perimeter to ensure that further evacuation was not needed. An entry team was sent in to determine the severity and extent of the leak.
