Fort Smith Fire Department responded to two house fires about 15 minutes apart early Wednesday morning. Crews first responded to a house fire on 6th street. Officials said an older woman and her son smelled the smoke and were able to get out of their home safely. Officials said the fire started in the kitchen. Not long after, crews responded to a house fire on 37th Street. Crews were told by neighbors the homeowner may have been inside because his car was parked out front. Fort Smith Fire Chief said no one appeared to be inside after entering the home.
