A national registry tracking cancer in firefighters is moving forward toward completion. The registry, stemming from a bill signed into law last summer, would provide detailed research on cancer rates among career and volunteer firefighters. A tool-much needed according to Fire Captain John Gulotta who says the Tucson Fire Department plans to be part of the registry. Gulotta said the registry will couple well with research already happening in Tucson. TFD has been working with researchers at the University of Arizona for years on a study aimed at proving exposure to cancer-causing toxins and testing intervention techniques. That includes washing down gear after fire calls to remove soot. Gulotta said the research and the new registry would give firefighters better tools when it comes to filing for workers comp if they develop cancer at some point in their life.
