Jerome, other fire departments contain house blaze to basement

Smoke could be seen billowing throughout Jerome from a three-story house Friday night as firefighters arrived to the put out the fire. Jerome Fire Chief said they were lucky to save the structure on East Avenue, also known as the “hogback” because the houses sit on a ridge along SR89a. The occupants were in the home, heard a pop, and evacuated. The occupants and one cat made it out of the house uninjured, Blair said, but one cat was killed in the fire. Blair thanked the Verde Valley Fire District, Cottonwood Fire, Jerome Police, Verde Valley Ambulance and his firemen for the quick response. The chief said a call came in at about 6 p.m. Jerome Fire arrived to find heavy smoke rolling out the front door.
