After Phoenix Fire Chief Kara Kalkbrenner revealed last week that she was diagnosed with breast cancer, on Sunday afternoon, it was announced that she is recovering from double mastectomy surgery.
The chief got personal on Facebook Wednesday night when she posted a letter addressing her diagnosis and how she was undergoing a double mastectomy and reconstruction surgery on Friday, Dec 13. “The diagnosis came after I discovered a lump in my breast several weeks ago,” Kalkbrenner wrote. "While this is unfortunate news, I have a positive outlook and feel confident that I will beat this."
Her procedure reportedly went "extremely well." As she is recuperating, the fire department supports her and her family's needs.
