Firefighters across Navajo County will be breathing easier thanks to a $816,000 grant. Six area fire districts will share in the grant that will fund the purchase of new self-contained breathing apparatus firefighters use when fighting structure fires. Pinetop Fire Chief Jim Morgan, who wrote the grant, said he has a better chance of getting funding if he includes fire districts across the White Mountains in the application, because they all work together to take care of the region. “If we can show the need across a wide area that needs equipment, it helps,” he said. The Assistance to Firefighters grant is offered through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and will supply $816,000 worth of self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA’s) to Pinetop Fire, Timber Mesa Fire and Medical, Forest Lakes, Heber-Overgaard, Pinedale-Clay Springs and Taylor-Snowflake districts.
