A truckload of recyclables caught fire Thursday resulting in a reroute of northbound State Route 90 traffic and triggered a multi-agency response.
There were no injuries in the one-vehicle mishap, an Arizona Dept. of Public Safety patrolman on scene said. Dry vegetation and brush quickly caught fire. Fueled by easterly winds and enough consumption-ready fuel, authorities estimated some 20 acres had been burned east of the highway shortly after the incident that was reported just before 12:30 p.m., with that figure expected to increase.
It was unclear what started the fire and too early in the incident for particular details, investigators on scene said. Officers did say the driver was able to stop and exit the truck at the first hint of smoke from the trailer, where the fire started.
