Authorities say a 16-year-old Boy Scout died Saturday during a hiking trip at Picacho Peak State Park. The teenager was part of a Boy Scout group out hiking the trails when he reportedly ran out of water and fell ill, authorities said. Pinal County sheriff’s officials say the group had water but ran out when they got to the top of a mountain and the teen began to exhibit signs of extreme dehydration on the way down. The boy was unconscious by the time a park ranger arrived at the scene. The Avra Valley Fire District was dispatched at about 1:30 p.m. to revive the boy, but he was pronounced dead, according to Capt. Patrick Calhoun. It’s unclear if the lack of water led to the teen’s death at Picacho Peak State Park between Phoenix and Tucson. His name hasn’t been released.
