The lightning-caused Whiskey fire has been creating a significant amount of smoke in the Flagstaff area, according to a Tuesday press release from the Coconino National Forest. The 3,900-acre fire is burning approximately eight miles east of Turkey Butte Lookout near Forest Service Road 538 to the southwest of town. A large scale firing operation planned for Wednesday were slated to secure control lines and keep the fire within the containment area, but is expected to produce a significant amount of smoke in the area for several days. Smoke is expected to spread to the north following a more seasonal wind pattern with winds coming out of the southwest. Smoke may affect areas including Flagstaff, Munds Park, Mountainaire, Kachina Village, Forest Highlands, Doney Park, Mormon Lake Village, Highway 89A Corridor, Sedona, Village of Oak Creek and portions of Interstate 40.
