VIDEO: The Casa Grande Fire Department has determined that a tire fire that sent a cloud of smoke into the air Monday was caused by an accident. The fire broke out around 2:45 p.m. at Hatfield’s Tires on East Jimmie Kerr Boulevard and destroyed a number of tires and a truck. No injuries from the fire were reported. Fire officials believe the fire was started when an employee was working on replacing a fuel pump on a vehicle near the business, said Casa Grande Fire Department spokesman Michael Wobser. The employee was using a metal grinding tool when sparks from the tool ignited brush, which then ignited fuel that was left over in a nearby open gas tank. The fire spread from there to a nearby pile of tires and a truck. There is no estimate on the damage caused by the fire. Police closed Jimmie Kerr Boulevard and the railroad tracks to all traffic while firefighters worked on controlling the fire.
