Firefighters in Glendale and Mesa say New Year's Eve fireworks are the cause of one housefire and may be the cause of another in metro Phoenix.
The Glendale Fire Department tweeted that fireworks ignited an attic fire on Thursday night near 43rd and Palo Verde Avenues. Two people made it out safely but are displaced, according to the agency.
Fireworks may also be to blame for a house fire Thursday night on McKellips Road and Stapley Drive in Mesa, according to Arizona's Family, a local television station. The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality also reported a New Year's Day haze in the air due to holiday-related fireworks and fireplace use.
The agency reported high levels of fine particulate matter in the air, with a layer of warm air just above the ground keeping the smoke close to the ground.
