It was a busy and dangerous weekend for Phoenix firefighters battling two massive fires. When temperatures near the fires reach 115 degrees and higher, there's always a concern for crew safety.
The reality is that it's dangerous for our firefighters with all that gear on, facing not only the day's extreme heat, but the heat from the flames, as well.
One way firefighters try to prevent a trip to the hospital for crews or anyone else at the scene is by having IV fluids on hand.
On Saturday, it was the largest response in the history of the Phoenix Fire Department, as a recycling fire escalated into a 6-alarm inferno near 35th Avenue and Buckeye Road. “More than 200 firefighters were out there on scene,” said David Ramirez with the Phoenix Fire Department.
