Evacuation orders were lifted Tuesday as containment improves in the Mescal Fire burning east of Phoenix, authorities said. Residents in the San Carlos High School area, Coyote Flats, Soda Canyon and those along Route 3 were allowed to return home, according to an information page run by officials with the Bureau of Land Management. The evacuations were issued Saturday. Southbound State Route 77 between Winkleman and U.S. 70 was also reopened from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. The blaze burning on the San Carlos Apache Indian Reservation had destroyed 66,193 acres and was 23% contained as of Tuesday morning. The fire jumped from 53,000 acres and 8% containment on Monday, according to InciWeb, a wildfire information website run by the National Wildfire Coordinating Group.
