A wildfire burning 23 miles northwest of Flagstaff closed parts of Highway 180 and recreation sites in the area on Monday. Portions of Highway 180 will be closed for the remainder of the day as responders work to contain the fire and conduct burnout operations, according to authorities. Drivers are asked to avoid Highway 180 north of Kendrick Park, and visitors to the Grand Canyon National Park are advised to use Highway 64 from Williams in order to access the entrance to the Park. Recreation sites in the area closed due to the fire are Red Mountain and Slate Mountain trailheads as well as Kendrick Cabin. The blaze, called the Slate Fire, grew to roughly 100 acres on Monday but authorities said no structures are threatened at this time.
