This year, several firefighters across the country have died while trying to save others, but Phoenix Fire is making sure their crews are ready in case something goes wrong. Firefighters train in what's jokingly called the "Taco Bell House" because it's built to replicate a fast food restaurant. But instead of serving up a meal, it delivers a disorienting simulation where firefighters have to call in a mayday.
"We've got a very high-stress event. And we've got to perform," said Dean Bradford, a firefighter with Phoenix Fire Department. "To be able to identify our equipment, identify our hose lines and identify where we are in the building at all times." Firefighters walk into the building and visibility quickly goes down to zero as trainers pump in artificial smoke.
