Extinguishing occupational exposures has been an ongoing battle for firefighters everywhere while they also battle for workers' compensation and occupational protections. More than 15 million firefighters worldwide are exposed to a complex mixture of combustion chemicals and products that seep into the skin, stick on their turnout gear, and are breathed in. While firefighters are fighting to save countless lives in the communities they serve, they are slowly risking their own lives due to cancer caused by occupational exposure. However, greater recognition of the cancer threats and new research to identify how to reduce cancer risks has now come to the fire service.
