VIDEO: All lanes of Highway 50 are back open in Placerville after a truck caught fire and the flames spread to nearby vegetation Wednesday afternoon, officials said. Both eastbound and westbound lanes have reopened, Caltrans said in an update just before 5 p.m.
The fire sparked near Greenstone Road around 1:20 p.m. The truck was hauling a trailer when it caught fire on the eastbound side of the highway. The fire then spread to the trailer, causing propane tanks to flare up, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The fire charred an estimated 20 acres, Cal Fire said. Crews got to the scene quickly and were able to stop the forward progress of the blaze.
No injuries were reported and no structures were damaged, Cal Fire said in an update.
Homes off Studebaker Road were evacuated as crews responded. As of 2:30 p.m., the sheriff's office said it was starting to let people return home.
