A Fire northwest of Yreka in Siskiyou County grew to 215 acres overnight and prompted officials to issue evacuation warnings for residents living near Highway 96.
The Lumgrey Fire started Monday night at about 6 p.m. and quickly grew to 180 acres as two fires merged and jumped the Klamath River in a remote, rugged mountainous area about 12 miles northwest of Yreka, officials said.
As of Tuesday morning the fire was 215 acres, with the fire on the south side of the Klamath River more than doubling overnight. However, crews "made good progress" on the fire overnight, as the acreage north of the Klamath River held at 150 acres, fire officials said. Crews were reportedly making progress building fire line on the south side of the river, officials said.
Josh Veal, a U.S. Forest Service spokesman, said fire line had been constructed around a portion of the fire, but he did not have an estimate of the percentage of containment.
