A Watsonville fire captain who survived a near fatal hunting accident last year is hoping his story will inspire others. Danny Lucas says he owes his life to blood donors. "It started out as a beautiful morning. It was snowing. And the boys were already on the mountain and I was trying to take a picture of them and grandpa and then a shot rang out," said Lucas. An accidental discharge and Lucas was hit by a large caliber bullet. It tore the femoral artery in his left leg and shattered the femur bone above his knee cap. It took them two hours of hiking to find phone service to call for help. "I was told I received 24 units of blood and I never expected that to happen to me and nobody does but thank god there were a lot of people who donate blood because you never know when it's going to be yourself or family member or some friends," said Lucas. Lucas returned home to a surprise welcome at the Watsonville Airport. He was greeted by well-wishers, Watsonville police officers and firefighters and friends.
