Stockton firefighters have doused a destructive blaze that tore through a number of homes. Fire Chief Richard Edwards said the fire is now out, but eight homes have been damaged to varying degrees. Earlier, firefighters said at least three homes were on fire. Officials said the blaze originally started as a grass fire, and Edwards said it is too soon to tell if it is fireworks related. The San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office said the grass fire was near the Stockton Rural Cemetery but spread to homes toward the south and southeast after the fire jumped the railroad tracks. The fire saw homes temporarily evacuated on both sides of the tracks in the Taft/Marshall and Stanford/College areas, according to the San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office. The Taft Avenue and Marshall Avenue areas are now good to repopulate and have taken no damage from the fire.
