A portion of the Procter & Gamble plant in Oxnard caught fire early Monday, but no one was injured and production of scarce toilet paper will not be affected, officials said.
The fire with flames shooting above the roofline was reported at 1:42 a.m. at the paper products manufacturing facility at 800 N. Rice Ave. Employees were working at the plant at the time, Oxnard Assistant Fire Chief Alex Hamilton said. He did not know the number of employees who were present when the fire broke out, but he said all were accounted for.
Workers make Bounty Paper Towels and Charmin Toilet Paper at the 51-year-old facility. Both types of products have become difficult to find in the wake of shoppers' stampede to hoard supplies during the coronavirus outbreak.
Company spokeswoman Tonia Elrod said the plant has been making the products at record levels to meet demand and will continue to do so despite the fire.
