According to the National Fire Protection Association, holiday decorations invite a higher rate of fire danger into our homes during December.
Sacramento Metro Fire Department explained that faulty or old electrical cords, broken bulbs, frayed wires, or simply knocking a Christmas tree over often cause fires. "[Christmas trees] go up pretty quickly because we have a bunch of combustibles, you got the tree, presents, electrical," said Steve Johnson, an arson investigator with Sacramento Metro Fire.
Such fires can double in size every 30 seconds.
"Many of these fires happen at night so make sure your smoke detectors work and their batteries are changed," said Parker Wilbourn, Sacramento Metro Fire public information officer. "Make sure that while you’re sleeping you close your doors."
