Sonora Fire Department personnel celebrated the arrival of a brand-new $561,000 type 1 Smeal fire engine Monday morning at its station on South Shepherd Street. The engine was funded largely through a federal grant under the Assistance to Firefighters program, with about $100,000 coming from the city's General Fund and the rest through reimbursements from other agencies for responding to incidents elsewhere. It’s the first new engine the department has purchased since 2005, and firefighters did a traditional "push-in" that dates back to horse-and-buggy days. Watch the video and see the Tuesday's Union Democrat for more information about the engine and how it will help the department's mission of protect the city and its residents from fire.
