Sacramento water rescue crews were called in to save people in a homeless camp and residents of several homes late Sunday night. First responders went to the area of Pell Circle and Du Bois Avenue in north Sacramento along the north side of Interstate 80. Both roads back up to Magpie Creek. The rescues happened after a power outage around 9:30 p.m. knocked out sump pumps that were pumping water out of the creek's overflow. Rescue crews used a boat to get to a group of people experiencing homelessness who were trapped in the fast-rising water. First responders then walked them out through knee-high water. One rescuer was seen giving a child a piggyback ride to higher ground.
